Federal disaster assistance is only available in the event of a Presidential disaster declaration.Flood insurance should be purchased before a flood threatens a home or business. There is a 30-day waiting period before the coverage goes into effect.Because the City of Eugene participates in the NFIP program, individuals may purchase flood insurance regardless of whether their flood risk is high, medium, or low.Insurance is also available for nonresidential properties, up to $500,000 for buildings and $500,000 for contents. Flood insurance is available for residential properties in amounts up to $250,000 for the building and $100,000 for contents. NFIP insurance can be purchased to protect homes, businesses, and belongings. Flood damage is not covered by homeowners’ policies.Lenders are responsible for determining whether a structure is located within the SFHA for flood insurance purposes. The vast majority of mortgages are federally backed in some way. The insurance must be maintained for the life of the loan.
